How To Use Cylinder Valves

By Karyn Shields

For every gas cylinder set up and usage, there are always safety measures to be considered. It is essential to set up the cylinder so that its valve is accessible all the time. For many cylinders equipped with stem valves, the valve spindle key should remain on its stem one it is in service. Before using the device threads on the regulators and other fittings should be checked properly to ensure compatibility.

Always have the regulator valves set away from you when opening the valves. Essentially, You should never install every cylinder adapters on a regulator. Attempting to repair the cylinder valves or the cylinder itself should also be avoided. Contact an expert or the supplier for suggestions and advice. Almost all valves are also marked as to their function. It is important that they are stored properly in services where there is enough ventilation.

There are also safety precautions to be considered. You should not use wrenches to open and close any type of valves and avoid using pliers. Never utilize monkey wrenches when loosing the gas caps. Normally, testing for some leaks is also an important undertaking. Most of the leak tests are important, regardless of its health risks because it can cause horrible things by displacing the oxygen.

The piping systems must also be checked for some leaks on a regular basis. Most of the leak detection procedures should be implemented before you use a compressed gas system. So, when you open and close the cylinders, there are many things to consider. You only have to open them slowly all the way.

Never use excess pressures if you cannot open it by hand. It is advised to contact the supplier for any replacement if necessary. Close the valves when not in use then bleed pressure from the regulator. You should avoid leaving every valve open when the equipment is not in use even when empty. Moisture and air may also diffuse through an open valve that may cause corrosion and contamination within the cylinder.

You should not also attempt to use the equipment without regulators and reduce the device on hand. You should not strike an electric arc on the device. Never tamper the cylinders in any way. Avoid repainting them and better chance the marking or identification with a certain safety device. Aside from its illegality, it is also dangerous for many non specialists to refill each device or changing the contents.

There could be an explosion, contamination or corrosion. Plastic fittings should not be used for any portion of the high pressured system. Interchanging the regulators and hose lines for one kind of gas to another is also a big NO. This is because, there might be explosions if flammable gases come in contact with oxygen under pressure.

Avoid hanging your clothes or equipment over your compressed system. Clothing can possibly be saturated with dangerous compound. If the gas is oxygen, clothing can easily catch fire and burn easily. Never use mercury pressure gauges in ammonia systems, since it may cause any form of explosive compound.

Finally, when you use this equipment, it is important to seek help from exerts. This is particularly, if you have no certain skills and knowledge in completing the task. It is also better to ensure that everything is in good hands. Always remember that this a simple equipment and it should be handled with someone who have knowledge and skills.
