The Role Of Portable Spill Containment Berms In Combating Pollution

By Marylou Forbes

Mankind is not kind to the planet that is there only home. The human race has been abusing the earth for as long as it has been living on the planet. Modern society seems to have become even greedier. Harmful substances are used every day without a thought for the devastating effect it may have on the environment. Many tons of poisonous chemicals are manufactured and transported every day and accidents occur frequently. When this happens it is imperative that equipment such as portable spill containment berms is available to limit the area affected by the spilled substances.

It is definitely a good thing to do whatever is possible to make sure that the spilled chemicals affect as small an area as possible, but further steps are needed to deal with the incident. The aim is to remove the harmful substances from the area where they were spilled and to transport them to a facility that is able to destroy it in a safe manner.

It is also true, however, that much money and effort are spent in finding ways in which to deal with spilled harmful chemicals. Of particular interest is the development of agents that are designed to either absorb the spilled toxins or to speed up the bio degrading process that will ordinarily take a long time. Once the agents have done their work, the spilled material can be handled and removed safely.

Scientists recently introduced yet another agent and in this case the agent may arguably be called miraculous. It succeeds in changing the entire structure of many harmful chemicals and turning them into a substance that is not only harmless, but that can be used in the construction of highways and other macadam surfaces. It can even be used in the manufacture of some rubber products.

Yet there are still many instances where these agents are not effective. This is especially the case if the pollution took place in a large body of water such as an ocean, lake or river. In such cases special equipment is used to separate the water from the pollutants. Once this is achieved the pollutants can be pumped into special containers and taken away from the pollution site for disposal.

Due to a variety of factors, such as the availability of funds and specially trained cleaning crews, authorities often have to prioritize the attention paid to a spill. Accidents that take place in remote areas or vigorous seas are often ignored. A high priority is given to cases where the pollution took place in ecologically sensitive areas, tourism hot spots and densely populated areas.

Enterprises that deal with harmful chemicals should do everything possible to prevent accidents. They should have strict policies governing the handling and transport of these substances and staff should be trained to deal with accidents speedily and effectively. It is equally important that the appropriate equipment is available at all times. Taking preventive measures is the responsible thing to do.

The earth is fast losing the ability to deal with the immense harm that humankind cause it every day. Chemical spills can have devastating consequences and the prevention of accidents should be a top priority. Nobody can afford to ignore the danger to both humans and the environment.
