Content Concerning Type K Custom Thermocouples

By Rosella Campbell

Thermocouples are among the most commonly used devices in temperature measurement. Type K custom thermocouples are the commonest among all other thermocouples mainly because they provide the largest operating temperature range. Like all other thermocouples, they are comprised of positive and negative legs. In general they are composed of chromel and alumel. The chromel part is composed of ninety percent nickel and ten percent chromium. The alumel is composed of ninety five percent nickel, two percent manganese, two percent aluminium, and one percent silicon.

The positive terminals are usually non-magnetic and have a yellow color whereas the negative ones are magnetic and are colored red. The device has a high sensitivity which is approximated at 41 micro-Volts for every unit degree of temperature. The temperature range lies within -200 to 1260 degree Celsius, even though it could vary relying on the make of gadget utilized. Since positive terminals are magnetic, the gadget goes through a step change once the magnetic terminal reaches the cure point. Cure point gets surpassed at a temperature of more than 354 degree centigrade.

If total percentage of individual parts in the alloy is adjusted, accuracy of the equipment may be highly affected. In K models, tolerance class one stays at negative or positive 1.5 centigrade over the range of 375 and -40 degrees. Deviations among gadgets that come from one production are negligible. There is a special make that is able to sustain accurateness in temperature adjustments up to 10 times more than normal makes.

This device could be applied in determining temperature changes in several environments. Among the environments are dry areas, water, mild chemical solutions, and gases. Some of the locations of application include nuclear plants, engines, oil heaters, and boilers. In medical facilities and the food industry, they are applied as thermometers to measure temperature changes. The ability of these gadgets to remain operational in rugged conditions leaves them better compared to the other temperature transduction appliances.

Materials used for construction gives them the ability to work well in various environments. Given that they are nickel-based, they are able to withstand abrasion and corrosion well. They can remain functional in inert and/or oxidizing atmospheres up to over 1260 degrees. Optimal performance is observed in clean oxidizing atmosphere.

Although this device functions in most settings, there are some environments that it must not be exposed to. Such atmospheres include sulfur filled atmosphere, alternating reducing and oxidizing environments, and partial oxidizing environments. Sulfur atmospheres are not recommended because they attack the terminals in a process known as sulfur attack.

The device should be protected using appropriate metals or ceramic protecting tubes. Protection is more necessary in reducing environments than in oxidizing environment, although generally, protection is required for a number of reasons. The first reason is to maintain the device looking clean and second reason is to provide general mechanical protection.

Type K thermocouple could be bought from various location around the globe particularly stores that stock related items. They are easy to work with simple since the installation exercise does not call for a lot of technical knowledge. A spoilt appliance can also be substituted with a new one, making their use flexible.
