Some Information On Containment Berms

By Tracie Knight

Pollution and spills are one of the greatest environmental problems of this day and age. When it does occur it can affect communities and sometimes even nations. It is a problem that needs to be addressed right away when it occurs through sound decision making processes, use of modern technology and containment like containment berms that are mostly part of modern containment systems.

A lot of people may believe berms as being invented in modern times. However, research and history have shown that they have been around since early times and medieval times. History shows that early natives in the Americas used them in their irrigation systems to channel water and waste to and from the fields. Medieval civil engineers also used them to control waste and rubble flow during their construction projects near and around the main areas of construction.

Spills will differ from each in the way that they behave. Some can be absorbed fast by the ground and the others cannot. Some spread fast while others stay pretty much put and crawl in spreading. Therefore as spills differ from each other, so will the special equipment needed for each one. Regular designs of containment equipment usually take the form of square or rectangular flooring with raised embankments to keep spills contained.

The rectangular and square type of containment designs look much like small shallow inflatable swimming pools for children. In fact the only difference would be that the walls and depths are much shallower in the containment unit, as well as being durable and resilient as well. It is these qualities that make them quite suited for flat ground applications especially near roads. They are quite popular in their being used during discharging and loading operations of tankers and liquid carriers, so as to minimize loss and pollution.

Probably the most important quality for these road applications of these kinds of systems are the resiliency of the walling. They should be able to spring back to the original shape and size as soon as pressure is released as is caused by tires running over it and such.

Due to differing slopes and gradients, and also differing porous capabilities of soils, there can be different customizable berm systems. One can get differing shapes through the use of differing types of connectors and mat floorings. One can also adjust the kind of materials depending on the liquid to be contained and the array of the land where the spill needs to be contained.

Materials nowadays are also much better made and very ecologically friendly. They can be disposed of in a very environmental friendly manner as most are now bio degradable. Most if not all are so resilient that even very rough surfaces will not puncture or tear them. In fact modern research makes these systems better everyday.

Should you want to buy these systems they are not hard to look for. If you are connected to the internet it is best to use the keywords spill containment and spill management systems to make the search easier. You can also do this if searching manually through Yellow Pages and local ad papers if needed.
