By Lisa Williamson

Whether you are taking part in a movie or just would like to intermingle in a new country the accent of the region is one way to sound like the locals. British accent training is a good way to introduce yourself to the local music of the language. Each region of the UK though has a slightly different way of talking, and it is important to not confuse them and to study the accent relevant to the region you are planning to imitate.

The mannerisms and tonal differences in British speech are very different to the American or South African way of speaking for example. However, it is also important to decide which of the accents you would like to learn, as there are many differences in the UK. Scotland, Wales and London all have their own very distinctive accents.

Once you have decided which you would like to imitate, it is important to immerse yourself into the daily life of the locals. You should walk, talk and breathe the culture and practice at every occasion possible. Listen carefully and emulate critically. In the process you should be using your aural abilities as well as the body language necessary to attain an authentic way of speech.

Get the opinion of the locals, who would probably identify a fake immediately. Ask them to help with constructive criticism and tips which would improve your speech. Have conversations with them and watch their mannerisms and their body language. This is the best lessons you will ever have, as they effortlessly speed up the learning process by just being themselves. It is a gold mine of information.

Another way to be open to the correct sound of the region is to immerse you into the local culture completely. Live amongst the locals, partake in conversation and brush up on the local slang twists. It isn't always possible to move to London though, so listening aurally to the news will also help sufficiently, or even engaging in conversation with British acquaintances will add to the exposure required.

A good way to be exposed to the speech of others with the required pronunciation is to watch the BBC news. News readers use the vocabulary and have the mannerisms which you could study and imitate at your own leisure. Practice and more practice is the path to a successful pronunciation. Use every opportunity to engage in using the accent and it will become easier and more attainable with time.

Study these, and practice by reading a book out loud emphasizing the gestures when necessary. Get hold of a British author's book and you will also consequently be learning the vocabulary which is frequently used. Practicing is the key to success.

It is important to be patient during your training. You have been conditioned all your life in your own accent, and it will not disappear magically overnight. Your thought and way of expression, also has to be changed to accommodate the culture and mannerisms of the British way of speech. It is however, not impossible to succeed. All it takes is a little ambition and a lot of practice.
