By Tara Dawson

Being able to speak in public is a great skill to have. The more you know about speaking in front of an audience, the more at ease you will become. Keep reading and learn how you can become a better speaker.

When you practice your speech, be sure to time it. This gives you the opportunity to make edits so you can fit within your allotted speaking time. If it is not long enough, add a bit of meat to it. Don't rush when giving speeches.

Make sure your speech is memorized. When you get to the point where you can give your speech at any moment, then you are ready to practice your overall delivery. You will be more comfortable on stage when you have memorized your speech.

While delivering your speech, look at your audience. Do not permit other things that may be occurring in the room to distract you. Your audience should have your complete and focused attention.

After you have memorized the broad strokes of your speech, practice often. This will help you to become more comfortable with what you are saying. Make sure you master proper pace and breathing. You will need to leave pauses for interruptions by the audience. Use the equipment you are going to use for the speech to practice if you can.

Keep moving if you suddenly realize you skipped something in your outline. Do not pause to go back, it might set you off course. Additionally, backing up will just make it abundantly clear to your audience that you messed up.

If public speaking makes you anxious, practice doing deep breathing. Controlling your breathing will reduce your level of stress. First, inhale and hold it for 5 seconds. Then slowly exhale for about 5 seconds. Do this about 6 times to calm yourself down.

Know your material to boost your public speaking confidence. Make a thoughtful topic selection, preferably one that you know well. Keep a conversational tone and your audience will be impressed with all your knowledge rather than be confused with all the complicated jargon.

As previously mentioned, it is essential to have good public speaking skills if you are interested in career advancement. Your goal when speaking in public is to get your message across to customers. Use the tips listed above to do that easily when you need to make a speech.
