Learn As Much As You Can About The Much Discussed Peptide Drug Discovery

By Serena Price

The pharmaceutical industry is notorious for controversy when new drugs are put on the market. Although peptide drug discovery is not a new drug per se, it has made its way into the spotlight and brought with it interesting new discoveries. As a value-added protein drug, the attention has now turned onto peptides to assist with muscle building in the sporting field.

Peptides are in essence the elements that generate protein. They are frequently found in the sporting arena and are used by athletes in sports that require muscle strength. For example, body builders or boxers may be extremely interested in using peptides to increase muscle strength. These drugs are normally applied either by cream, ingested or injected for their anabolic effect on muscle mass. When athletes have muscular pain, they use these drugs to soften the muscle and to increase the healing process allowing them to get back into the game much quicker.

Peptides have gained a lot of interest as a supplement. It is easily digested by the body and is considered to be much more beneficial and stable within the body. This is because peptides influence how our bodies react to physical exercise and diet. Athletes are reaching for peptides to help give them that upper edge in their game of choice.

Peptides are not only used for bodybuilding. There are some peptides that are used in skin care products as it has anti-aging properties. The most common one used in skin care products is collagen stimulating peptides. They come in the form of serums and creams and may take some time to work and make a difference.

The sports governing body regulates which drugs are allowed and in what quantities. Some peptides are therefore banned from being used by athletes. There are those which are injected and usually these are the banned ones. The effect of this is that the athlete has an increase in lean body mass and a lower fat percentage which gives him/her a great advantage on the sports field.

As with any drugs you should watch out for side effects. Peptides have not yet been thoroughly tested on humans and so the long term and short term effects are not known. Long term side effects have not yet been fully uncovered and there are lots of assumptions that it may cause other disease such as cancer or heart disease.

The biggest concern is if peptides are steroids. The short answer is that it is not. Both peptides and steroids are hormones but each as a different effect on the body. Steroids mimic testosterone and peptides have an effect on the growth hormone. Most steroids are illegal and are used more frequently than peptides which are newer on the market.

It is critical to ensure that you check if the peptide you choose to take meets the requirements and standards of the FDA. Peptide drug discovery is still relatively new and not much research is available on the consequences of taking this drug. The outlook, however, does seem rather positive.
