The Importance Of Rubber Gaskets For Aircraft

By Judy Sullivan

You may not have spent a lot of time thinking about a common product that is found in many applications and forms. The product is the humble gasket. It serves as a protective element between the inside and outside or between two different surfaces. For example, you can find them in automobiles and in homes. The purpose is different in each case. It is different yet when you look at rubber gaskets for aircraft. Here are some details that describe the product and its typical purposes.

One use for these items is to seal around pipes and wires so that they are not exposed to negative effects from the environment. These issues with the weather conditions can include moist and humid climates, very hot weather or very cold weather. Some or all of these conditions are found strongly in the planes and other air transportation equipment, due to cold and variations in air pressure as well.

In broad terms, the purpose of gasket seals is to prevent conditions or substances on one side of the seal from migrating over to the opposite side of the seal. In order to be effective, the construction material and its manner of installation must be such that it prevents leakage. In the construction of aircraft, there can be added problems of air pressure and vibration. Using the right adhesive to apply the gasket is also a factor in its effectiveness.

There have been many materials used over the years to attempt to create a gasket that works. Examples are wood and cork. Unfortunately most do not provide an effective long term barrier against leakage. Metals are another example of a material which may cause as many leakage problems as it solves. Most products today are made of synthetics, including synthetic rubber, polyurethane, silicone or ethylene propylene.

Gaskets are constantly proving that they are among the most effective seals to use, especially when it comes to vehicles. Thanks to their high resistance to temperature changes and their flexibility which helps them to keep tight even when there is constant pulling and pushing effects on the rubber and synthetic products are manufactured in the largest number. This style is called compression fit.

Although the label may be defined as "rubber gasket", in fact most products consist of more than one substance. Usually additional materials are added to the basic compound. This practice makes the product more durable and effective in performance.

When considering seals for aircraft, there is a need for top quality materials. In particular, the pressurization of cabins and the maximum efficiency of jet engines requires good seals. Seals around the windows, hatches and doors are spots of maximum vulnerability.

Many different types of the products exist. Each one is intended for a specific purpose and environment. Some of the major styles include bulb, blade, digraph, lip tadpole and bellows.

Ensuring that the rubber gaskets for aircraft are of the highest quality is often a life and death decision. The industry depends upon the effectiveness of the seal is part of health and safety considerations. Using the best quality products is always necessary.
