How Spill Containment Berms Helps To Limit Damage From Pollution

By Marissa Velazquez

Mankind has been fouling the earth for many centuries and has grown used to pollution in many different forms. However, few things can cause such instant damage to the planet and the immediate environment as a disaster involving the spilling of toxic chemicals. The results can be instantaneous and can cause widespread harm. The most immediate priority is to contain the spread of the chemicals. For this task, spill containment berms are utilized.

Containing spilled chemicals and toxins is only the first step in a complicated process that must see to it that the harmful waste is removed and rendered harmless. Various techniques and different types of equipment are used to do this. Each situation is judged individually and the method employed will depend upon the specific circumstances of the incident. The severity, location and nature of the incident will dictate the action necessary.

These days there are specially designed agents that are able to deal with chemical waste. Some of them are able to accelerate the natural bio degrading process whilst others are able to absorb the harmful materials. Obviously, these agents will not work with all types of toxins and chemicals. However, when they do, the resultant mass can be transported to a facility where disposal can take place.

One of the most exciting new developments is an agent that is not only able to absorb the harmful toxins and chemicals, but also able to transform them into a substance that is no longer toxic. In fact, the agent combined with the chemicals form a new material that can actually be used in a productive manner to manufacture a wide variety of rubber products and materials that are used in tarring roads.

IN some cases the spilled chemicals cannot be absorbed by any type of agent and neither does it have the ability to degrade naturally. If it was water mass that was polluted, special equipment is used to separate the chemicals from the water. The chemicals are them skimmed from the water and pumped into big tanks before it is removed to facilities specially equipped to make sure that it can be destroyed in a safe manner.

It is a pity that cleaning up operations are so expensive. This fact forces authorities to set priorities and in many cases spillages are simply left alone. This is especially true of coastal areas that are remote and where there is at least some chance that the waves will remove the pollutants. However, high priority is placed upon areas that are densely populated, environmentally sensitive or of historical significance.

It is critically important that every organization that deals with or handles potentially harmful chemicals and toxins have an action plan in place in case disaster strikes. One of the most important steps is to make sure that the people working with the chemicals are properly trained and that they have access to the equipment necessary to deal with accidents.

Pollution is a reality. It is vital to be prepared. Spill containment berms should be part of the kit carried whenever these chemicals and toxins are handled or transported. Without the ability to contain the spread of the spillage widespread damage may result.
