Geotechnical, sometimes shortened to just geotech engineering, is a form of civil engineering that normally deals with earth materials and how they behave. Those in this profession are primarily responsible for the investigation of the many layers of rock and soil that are on the earth. The reason why that has to be done is so that their physical and chemical properties can be determined.

With all of the information that they are able to acquire, the designing of earthworks structures and foundations can begin in earnest. This is very beneficial and also quite necessary in order to create certain things. Such things would have to be buildings, roads and other related projects that are also in need of such things.

The ultimate goal is to design systems which can be classified as adequate enough when it concerns the stabilizing of soil. These are the ones that people use to ensure everything and everyone is kept safe, even when they are on something that is built on unstable soil. Earthquakes and other natural disasters will also have lesser impact on roads.

The geotechnical engineers are also known to work on certain projects, especially those that deal with underwater soil. An example of this would be projects concerning offshore platforms or those that affect marinas in any way. It is often seen as a different environment, and it truly is, although the purpose remains constant.

Everything about the design process will begin with the proper investigation of the subsurface. In this part, one may obtain samples by making use of test pits or perhaps bores. Engineers will then examine the properties contained within. This may include, but will not be exclusive too looking for rock pockets, examining the chemical make up as well as the stability.

This investigation allows for the professional to be able to determine the impact that is potentially dealt when the ground is disturbed. Those who go in the profession of geotech engineering are also required to come up with support structures in order to accommodate roads, dams and tunnels. Should the earth be moved or just excavated, then it is important to utilize the right support so that the possibility of a cave in will remain low or even non existent. The systems may include steel or concrete walls.
