Liposomes are organelles. They are artificially made. They are composed of a dual layer of phospholipids. They serve very several functions. Many of them include delivering food nutrients and therapeutic drugs.

They have various constituents. The components are chiefly chemicals or biological molecules that are made out of biological substances. They involve phospholipids. Those phospholipids are filled with phosphatidylcholine. They might also contain surfactant compounds for instance phosphatidylethanolamine which is usually obtained from eggs.

Their surfaces are produced in such a method that they can attach themselves to the body tissues and organs. These tissues might be unhealthy or even healthy. The substances which occur upon their coverings that aid them in adhering to the body tissues are entitled ligands.

They are classified to different categories. Those classes depend upon the intricacy of the vesicles themselves. They comprise of cochleate vesicles, multilamellar vesicles and also small unilamellar vesicles. Every class serves a specific role and bears a different structure.

The vesicles were discovered in around 1961 by Alec Bangham. This was a British hematologist. The discovery was made in Cambridge at an institute called Babraham institute. The name liposome is of Greek origin. It simply means a body that is rich in fats.

The skins of the vesicles are insoluble within water. This shows that they do not allow substances which can dissolve within water to go through them. However, substances which do not normally dissolve in water easily pass through the membranes. Such substances involve fats or lipids.

The vesicles have aqueous solutions in their center. Aqueous solution has salts which are dissolved within water. The salts are hydrophilic. Therefore, these vesicles are capable of carrying molecules which are able to mix with water and again those that may not dissolve in water.

They simply release those molecules that they contain. They achieve that owing to ligands found in their surfaces. Those ligands assist them to adhere unto the cells that they usually target. After adhering to them, they again usually unfold and deliver those components.

The vesicles assist in different departments of medicine. They assist in conveying a broad array of nutrients, molecules and substances to body cells. Those comprise nutritional supplements plus again drugs which are utilized to cure various illnesses. They are further used to convey DNA products.

They further help for the control of several tumors. They might be used to convey drugs to the tumorous cells inside the body. This therefore broadens their usage within medicine.

Manufacturing them depends on several factors. Such factors include the size of the particles that are to be carried, the solubility of the materials, the number and also the medium to be used among other factors. This therefore means that manufacturing them is a manual and complicated process.

Researches are ongoing to develop immune resistant particles. This means vesicles which may not be sensed and destroyed by cell of immune system. It would raise their lifespan in human body hence improving their effectiveness. Liposomes are therefore vital biological man made materials. They help greatly within many fields in medicine and also health in general.
