What You Should Know About Spill Containment Berms

By Kerri Stout

Chemicals and other substances can be perfectly safe for use. They can also be very dangerous. Whatever they may be among the two, they can have their own important functions. The toxic and the highly flammable ones even have their uses, and they can even be used quite extensively in most industries. Due to this, one must observe proper procedures when handling and using them for daily operations.

Since these industries often make use of very harmful ingredients, everyone must observe caution and get into safety measures. To keep the workplace safe, people make use of spill containment berms to prevent the toxins from contaminating things. These berms are special holders that are often used to contain hazardous liquids. They are also used especially for oil filled machinery, fuel tanks, truck washing decks, and others than could develop the tendency to leak and expose these liquids to the environment.

Such spill containers often come in various designs, models, and sizes. They also function in varied tasks and cater to different needs. At the top of the list of well used containment devices is the one known as the bund. This is a back up device that is used in connection with storage tanks. They are placed to catch any drips of potentially dangerous chemicals.

Drip trays, for the most part, are used to avoid spills from any leaks that an equipment may be having. Without such things, the spillage might get to areas where it is not supposed to be and could start accidents and other untoward incidents. Flammable liquids could flow their way to combustible stuff which can blow up the entire work area. Hence, to prevent such troubles, drip trays should be placed next to machines suspected of leaks.

A similar variety is known as the sump. This is also called an interceptor. They are low spaced devices that are used to recharge aquifers and manage surface runoff. Interceptors are commonly used in the sewage systems.

Another type is the concentric pipe. They often come with an outer shell of sorts that serve as protection against spillage. Since they are two pipes, one inside the other, they carry out the task of containment quite efficiently. The outer one is typically made out of a far more stronger material such as steel or a similar one that is up to the challenge.

Precipitators, flares, catch pots, and scrubbers all encompass gas treatment units. These ensembles are usually part of the equipments mainly used in the main process. They have storage capacities as well, which is why they are used for such instances. They are very important in the reduction of the concentration of fumes and gases.

The expansion systems are things designed to prevent pressure build up. When uncontrolled, pressure will lead to loss of containment. In general, such things are used in pipelines, reactors, and liquified gas storage systems.

For safety reasons, people have to follow guidelines. This includes the wise usage of containers. These things should be able to hold harmful chemicals safely until they are disposed of. They should also be different from the main equipment, even when they work in close proximity. This is primarily done to avoid negative effects.
