Choosing Nursing Assistant Training Kentucky

By Katrina Wheeler

The first step to becoming a CNA is selecting nursing assistant training Kentucky. Certification starts with choosing a school that offers a certain number of hours in the classroom and some hours of practicing clinical skills in a long term care facility. A state exam is required to get certified to do CNA work and the school chosen must be accredited or the application for testing is certain to be rejected.

In the end, passing the certification test is the top priority. The ability to work in the field depends on it. In an effort to assist students with passing the exam, the board has created guide for study. They have also created a list of all the schools that meet their requirements. A phone number can be found at their website. Be sure to find out the percentage of students that actually become certified.

This information is essential. It is a true measuring stick of a program. If most of them make to certification the first time then it must be top quality training. The better instructor is familiar with state requirements. A testing procedures and study guide is available at the website of the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

Another question that can be asked is how much practice time is available. Practicing each procedure is very important. Typically students will practice these on each other. There is usually a mannequin for those procedures that cannot be done on other students. Without many hours of practice it will not be possible to pass state testing.

Be sure to thoroughly read the testing procedures and study guide. There will be tips on how to best prepare. There is a written exam and a practical test of the clinical skills. The written portion has 75 questions. Getting 52 out of 75 correct will mean a passing score. All questions are multiple choice. In some cases the test may be done orally.

Clinical skills are the everyday work that will be done with a patient. There are definite steps for each process whether it is helping someone brush their teeth or getting them into a wheelchair. This part of the testing requires a timed test of five skills. If one step is left out of any of these five the student will fail. If certain steps are not done in proper order this will also result in a fail.

Prior to being accepted into a program, a criminal background check will be done. A TB test will be needed and a physical. A check for MMR may also be required. The prospective student usually incurs these expenses. If there is any reason even one of these will not be passed, it is better not to waste the time and money.

There are qualities one should possess to be a good caregiver. The ability to calm others, empathy, patience, and dependability are a few of those qualities. The choice for nursing assistant training Kentucky is also the choice for caring for others and putting their needs first in all things. Helping them to do what they need to, to have the best quality of life.
